What is Drystone Walling?

Drystone walling is a traditional method of building walls without mortar, relying on expert stone placement and structural balance to create strength and stability. This time-tested technique has been used for centuries across the UK, in particular throughout Yorkshire and still remains to this day one of the most durable and sustainable forms of wall construction.

Properly built drystone walls can last for decades—even centuries—while blending naturally into their surroundings.

Our Drystone Walling Services in Leeds

Freestanding Garden & Boundary Walls

Freestanding drystone boundary walls provide a strong, long-lasting alternative to fencing, delivering security, privacy, and clear land definition. Their robust construction stands up to harsh weather with minimal maintenance, while their natural stone finish adds character and value to any property. Unlike timber fencing, or hedges they won’t rot or require regular replacement or maintenance.

Retaining Walls

Drystone retaining walls offer a durable, natural solution for managing level changes and preventing soil movement. Built without mortar, they allow for natural drainage, reducing pressure build-up and minimising long-term failure risks. Their flexibility makes them ideal for ground movement, while their timeless appearance enhances both traditional and contemporary landscapes.

Decorative & Feature Walls

Premium drystone walls and features elevate outdoor spaces through craftsmanship, precision, and bespoke design. These high-end installations combine structural integrity with visual impact, creating statement pieces that increase property value and prestige. Whether used for feature walls, seating, or architectural elements, they deliver a refined, heritage-quality finish built to last generations.

Key FAQs:

  • How long do they last? Drystone walls can last Hundreds of years if maintained, with many existing walls over a century old and the oldest still standing date back over 5000 years, the most notable examples being the Céide Fields in County Mayo, Ireland, which are roughly 5,800 years old. Other ancient examples include Neolithic structures at Skara Brae in the Orkneys (c. 3000 BC) and Bronze Age “reaves” on Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor (c. 1600 BC).
  • Do they need concrete foundations? No, they are designed to be free draining and to flex and settle with ground movement, preventing cracking from frost.
  • Why do they fall down? The most common reason is trees and large root growth, But can also be excessive ground movement, high wind or animals, but they can be repaired and rebuilt much easier than other types of walling.
  • How do I maintain them? Remove trees/ivy, replace fallen or dislodged capstones, and keep excessive vegetation a minimum.. or just leave them to grow over they’ll still most likely outlast us.
  • Are they expensive? That depends on a few key consideration; Access, ground conditions and gradients (building on a steep incline uses more stone and takes more time and skill), type/quality of stone and required finish will all affect the price. Drystone walls are labour intensive and require skilled craftsmen to build correctly and efficiently. However they are a long-lasting investment that can add value to your property and are relatively quick and cheap to repair.
